Decipher: When EU-funded projects need Drupal expertise, they talk to Annertech

Top class consultancy for a very ambitious project.

Located in the heart of Ireland’s capital city, Dublin Institute of Technology provides an innovative, responsive and caring learning environment for a diverse range and level of programmes to students of all ages and backgrounds.

We provide DIT with Drupal consultancy and development services to help their very capable team with some of the trickier aspects of their Drupal implementations. DIT say that our "in-depth knowledge ... skilled mentoring and excellent project management helped [them] to deliver a robust solution" - just like a qualification from this prestigious institution.

Background

DIT are partners in the Decipher project, an EU-funded research project. The Digital Media Centre within DIT approached Annertech in May 2012 for some advice and consulting with some of the trickier development aspects that had been encountered on the project.

Approach

Our initial work was to get around some of the pressing issues on the Drupal 6 platform, and from there, devise a strategy for moving the development effort to a new Drupal 7 platform. We worked closely with the team in DIT, and the other European partners, to put this strategy in place, with a clear focus on skills-transfer to the point where much of the work could be taken on by the various development teams. From this point, Annertech's role evolved into an advisory capacity on the issues encountered and how to implement Drupal best practices.

Some of the challenges we encountered on this project were: providing training for developers with differing skill-sets and backgrounds; integrating the Drupal system with a wide variety of external services, including semantic enrichment services, and 3rd party search tools; developing a system which made most efficient use of Drupal's APIs and contributed modules, where some core project elements had relied on custom PHP and database queries in a Drupal wrapper.

Results

When completed, our developers said this was the most interesting Drupal project they had ever worked on, increasing our knowledge of Drupal even further, coming up with very innovative solutions to very specific requirements, and getting to do a lot of experimental work which will be very useful on other projects.
