Oxfam Ireland: Consolidating multiple CMS Providers to one Drupal platform

Bringing many platforms all under on roof.

Oxfam work directly with communities and local partners to support people to make their way out of poverty and exercise their social, economic, political and civil rights. Oxfam Ireland is one of 17 Oxfams working together in 92 countries and has 51 shops across Ireland, north and south, with over 1,000 volunteers delivering real change to the lives of people affected by poverty.

This project was nominated for an Eircom Golden Spider award in the “Best Social Entrepreneur, Charitable & Non-Profit Organisations” category.

Annertech began working with Oxfam Ireland in August 2012. Working alongside their in-house design team, we were responsible for the re-development of their main website. The existing architecture consisted of multiple websites on two different platforms, WordPress-MU and Interspire CMS, and a number of e-commerce systems. We replaced all of these with one single Drupal 7 site so all content can now be managed from one place.

The main aim of this project was to simplify Oxfam Ireland's digital setup. We simplified and unified the web system architecture to increase the level of donations, make it easier to manage and reduce costs. The site was built in a mobile-first, responsive manner, with a very simple to understand navigation which works seamlessly on all device sizes - desktops, tablets, and mobiles. We built in a system for page layouts that allows Oxfam Ireland to create a variety of custom page styles. This allows the site admins to publish their text, image and video content in a variety of ways, always communicating in the most effective manner on all devices. We created petition and other e-activism functionality to help Oxfam Ireland supporters to contact changemakers about important issues. These can take the form, for example, of selecting your local TD or Minister and then filling out a form to submit a pre-formatted email. All donations and campaign actions are then integrated with the "Raiser's Edge CRM", through the use of custom data exports.

A central feature of the new Oxfam Ireland website is e-commerce, in the form of donations capabilities and an online store. We created features to more easily allow users to make single and/or regular donations. This system supports donations in Euro and Sterling and transactions can be enabled via credit/debit card, PayPal, or setting up a direct debit. As well as multi-currency donations, we also implemented a multi-currency shopping cart, again allowing customers to pay by credit/debit card or PayPal. The shop contains a mixture of products, from "Unwrapped Gifts" such as a 'clutch of chicks' to 'mosquito nets', to showcasing selected items from the Oxfam Bridal and Oxfam Home & Furniture retail shops. By sectioning parts of the shop, Oxfam Ireland can then showcase certain products, leading to a higher return on investment.

Though the timeline was very tight, we were delighted to work with such an esteemed organisation as Oxfam Ireland and to help them to help others. When complete, Oxfam Ireland told us that not alone had we made great changes to their workflows, allowing them to get much more work done, but also that their online revenue increased by 9%, page views increased by 13%, number of pages viewed per visit increased by 31%, average visit duration increased by 55%, visits from mobile devices increased by 315%, average visit duration on a mobile device increased by 16%, visits via Facebook increased by 109%, visits via Twitter increased by a massive 515%. Super.

Oxfam Ireland Testimonial

We worked with Annertech for a complete redesign and rebuild of our website on the Drupal platform. Delivery of the project was required within a very demanding timeframe, which Annertech met without fail. The website was developed in a way that was fully responsive and mobile friendly which won it lots of attention in various blogs and among other non profit organisations, both in Ireland and internationally. One of the outstanding things about working with Annertech is the breadth of their technical knowledge, their proactive approach, their commitment and availability and above all, the quality of their final product. They are innovative in their working methodologies and a pleasure to work with. As a result, Oxfam Ireland has continued to work with Annertech as our preferred web partners.
